At-Home Workout Day Seven: Active Rest

Let’s talk about rest.

It can be one of the hardest parts of a training plan. For many althetes, resting or taking it down a notch is difficult when you want to be the best. First, this free workout isn’t a rigorous as say, the patriots training camp, but it’s still important to take rest and give our bodies a break.

That doesn’t mean sitting on the couch and binge watching gossip girl with a jumbo bag of Cheetos.


Taking rest is important, yes. But it also important to keep moving. Just because we’ve been working out tushes off for 30 minutes a day, doesn’t give us an excuse to be sedentary for the rest. Our bodies need and crave movement. constant movement. Sitting down all day is said to be the “smoking” of the new generation.

So what are you supposed to do today? It’s called active rest.

Active rest is low-impact activity. Like walking your dog. Active rest is important for recovery, as it increases blood flow to tissues and muscles, flushing out the old and brining in the new, oxygenated blood cells. Yum right?

Here are some ideas for your active recovery. Pick something you’d enjoy, that way you look forward to your days off.

Active Recovery Options

  1. Walking
  2. Yoga
  3. Swimming
  4. Biking
  5. Stretching
  6. Foam Rolling
  7. Paddleboarding
  8. Hiking
  9. Playing with your kids
  10. Playing with your dog
  11. Cross-Country Skiing (this can be intense, take it easy)
